"The Vault" is the thirteenth episode of Season 1 in the American sitcom Ghosts. It premiered on January 20, 2022.
Synopsis[]
Just as Sam and Jay are set to host a friend's wedding that could get their B&B business off the ground, the ghost of Hetty's husband, Elias Woodstone is discovered to have been released.
Plot[]
Sam and Jay's B&B is set to be the venue for a high-profile influencer's wedding. The wedding is taking place the following day. Sam is hoping this will be good for their business. Hetty mentions that she hopes this wedding is better than hers, her husband Elias having arrived drunk and smelling of another woman. Sam questions why she would marry him and Hetty explains it was so her father could close a land deal. Mark, the contractor, walks in and says there is something they need to see. Sam and Jay follow and are shown a secret passageway that is revealed when a sconce is twisted. Behind the passage there is a room with a large vault. Mark goes to get tools to open the safe. Hetty tells Sam that she believes her husband build it to hide their riches. Sam asks if one of the ghosts will walk through the wall to see what is inside. Pete volunteers, but is unable to pass through whatever material the door is made from. Thor thinks Pete may not have been strong enough and charges the door, also unsuccessfully. Everyone is baffled, as this is the first time that they have seen a material impenetrable by ghosts. Sam asks Hetty is she might know the combination. Hetty suggests her wedding anniversary, which was not correct. She then suggests the maid, Elias's affair partner's, birthday and it is correct. They open the door and Elias walks out of the vault, as a ghost. Elias is confused and Hetty is displeased.
Upon further investigation, the vault is empty aside from Elias's corpse. Sam has to rush off to attend to the soon to be married couple. Hetty questions Elias about how he is there and he asks if she searched for him when he disappeared. She says she assumed he ran off with a girl. He explains that the vault maker locked him inside and left him to suffocate, due to his unwillingness to pay and his having fathered a child with the vault makers wife. The ghosts introduce themselves and Elias tries to flirt with Alberta. She shuts it down immediately. Hetty and Elias bicker on and off over his unfaithfulness. He asks her what happened to his obedient wife. Hetty tells him modern women don't defer to their husbands. Elias states that Sam is just a bad influence. Hetty calls Sam and Jay's marriage respectable, stating Elias was a horrible husband and her least favorite cousin. Elias storms away, walking through a florist. This causes her to be overwhelmed with lust and boldly hit on Mark. She quickly snaps out of it.
Jay is showing the bride the kitchen and talking about the menu when Elias enters. He walks right through her, causing her to flirt with Jay. Jay tells Sam, who is hesitant to believe it. Jay convinces her and they debate if they should tell her fiancé. They decide that telling him is the right thing to do, even though they will lose the venue payment and advertising for their B&B. Sam is concerned, as they need an influx of cash to pay their loans. If they default they could loose the house. The bride-to-be's dog runs through Elias's leg and become starts humping a pillow. Sam connects the dots and asks Elias if he walked through the bride. He confirms he did and Sam rushes to stop Jay from telling the fiancé. Elias, learning of their financial situation, decides to sabotage the wedding and the business. Sam tries to stop Jay, but Elias walks through them leading to them propositioning the fiancé. Sam tries to pass it off as a loyalty test. They think it is weird and leave, deciding to have the wedding elsewhere. Sam and Jay are worried they may have to sell the house when Elias struts in bragging and shows off his fancy gold pocket watch. Isaac points out that if he has it on his ghost it must be on his corpse. They retrieve the pocket watch and decide to sell it and use it to pay the bank. Elias says he will just continue to sabotage the business. Sam asks why he is doing this and he claims it is because they have corrupted Hetty.
Hetty disagrees, telling him she hasn't been corrupted, she's change, possibly for the better. She points out she has watched and learned from the people around her how to be a better version of herself. She states he too could be better if he tried. He says he doesn't want to change and that good and evil isn't real. He also calls Hetty inferior. She says "Well, then, you can go to hell." He is sucked down into hell by a red light. The group is undecided if this is her power or if it was due to his unchanging nature. Hetty tests this by lightheartedly attempting to send Trevor to hell. It does not work and Trevor is offended. While they say they don't believe that she has that power, yet they still seem threatened by her.

- Geraldo Rivera's television special is brought up and talked about. The special centered on the live opening of a walled-off underground room in the Lexington Hotel in Chicago once owned by noted crime lord Al Capone, which turned out to be empty apart from debris.
Trivia[]
- This is the first time a ghost is seen going to hell, which shocks the other ghosts since they had only seen the newly departed ascend to heaven up to that point.
- Hetty briefly joked that she could send people to hell, scaring the other ghosts. Hetty's actress, Rebecca Wisocky, confirmed that Hetty knows that isn't her character's power; however, she'll continue to joke about it to keep the other ghosts in line.
- This is the first time an event is hosted at the mansion while Sam and Jay own the mansion. However; it is shown in the ghost's lives, that plenty of events were held at Woodstone Mansion.
- If Sam and Jay don't start making money soon, they'll lose the house.
- This is solved when they make money from selling Elias's pocket watch in the episode Trevor's Pants.
- Pop culture:
- Nancy Meyers movies
- Scrooge McDuck
- Flower talks about robbing a bank once which is seen in the episode Flower's Article.
- When Jay asks "if country music was playing" is likely a reference to the song The Devil Went Down to Georgia.
