Biography[]

Early life[]

Sam was born in Ohio to Frank & Sheryl and raised as an only child by her mother.[2] In the episode Trevor's Body, it is referenced that her parents are divorced, when Sam was ten. Her father wasn't around a lot as Sam was growing up for soccer games, recital in the fifth grade, or birthdays.

In high school she was part of the drama club and built the sets. She never acted because of "politics".[3]

Also in high school, Sam was obsessed with the French culture. She struck up an online friendship with a French guy named Pierre La Croix and they became pen pals. On Sam's prom night, Pierre messaged her, promising that he was coming from France to America to escort her to her prom. Sam got ready, but when the limo came up to pick her up, a group of mean girls (one girl named Kelly Blankenship) threw baguettes at her, revealing that they were "Pierre." The next day of school, Sam found baguettes in her locker, causing further humiliation which was revealed in the episode Attic Girl.

Despite her mother's wishes for her to go into law, Sam attended Northwestern University after high school and maintained a 4.0 GPA while pursuing journalism. While in journalism school became friendly with Isabel, who had recently gotten married.

Sam later moved to Manhattan, New York City, where she met Jay, with whom she later married. When she met Jay she didn't really live in the West Village, but in Jersey City, New Jersey. She went to the same coffee shop that Jay Arondekar frequented to meet a friend. They met in line and got to chatting. She then proceeded to go to the coffee shop every day trying to meet him again, before actually moving to New York, as mentioned in He Sees Dead People.

Her mother died unexpectedly six years before Sam inherited Woodstone, leaving Sam guilt-ridden because they had a big fight at Thanksgiving, which was the last time she saw her alive.[2]

In the episode The Christmas Spirit, it's noted that she loves Christmas and celebrates as early as June with a flavored coffee. She calls the season not just a holiday but a lifestyle. Sam takes the opportunity to try to set up Jay's sister Bela Arondekar with her friend Eric.

Appearance[]

Sam has shoulder-length wavy golden-blonde hair and blue eyes. She usually dresses quite femininely in colorful blouses, sweaters, skirts, and dresses.

Personality[]

Jay describes his wife as someone who is very impulsive. She is also very flirty towards her husband and can be quite hot-tempered. Sam also appears to be quite superstitious when she lit a clump of sage to "ward off any evil spirits," in Woodstone Mansion.

After the accident, she begins to behave strangely due to her ability to see the ghosts. Her husband passes this off as a side-effect of her induced coma and convinces her to ignore the, "ghosts." This causes her to unintentionally offend an electrician whom she mistook for another ghost as seen in Hello!.

She also has a bad habit of lying and having it spiral out of control as shown in several episodes.

Nevertheless, Sam is overall a genuinely kind-hearted woman, capable of showing empathy toward the ghosts, like when she comforts Thorfinn after learning the true reason why his body was never recovered and never had a proper viking funeral in Viking Funeral, choosing to do the funeral instead of selling his bones which could've helped her and Jay with their finances. Also, while at first she is uncomfortable with the presence of the ghosts as well as being capable of seeing and hearing them, Sam quickly comes to enjoy talking with them and grows fond of them, considering the ghosts as a group of dear friends and part of her family.

Quotes[]

"Oh, yeah, no, that Starbucks is actually built on the site of a former hospital for the criminally insane; I can't go anywhere near it, it's a hell-scape"

— Isaac's Book

  • She and Jay do date nights.
  • In the episode "The Baby Bjorn," she admits to the ghosts that she blocks out much of the stuff they do.
  • She's happy for her mother when she gets sucked off and glad that she got to say goodbye. She's also sad and feels like she doesn't have a mom again.[2]
