"And thus, two sinners saved from the thorny vines of lust that snake up from the underworld."

— Patience, Sam's Dad

Patience is a Puritan ghost who roamed the soil of Woodstone Mansion. She was killed by bloodletting in the late 1600s. She is first seen in the episode "Isaac's Wedding" after being mentioned for the first time in "Holes Are Bad."

Biography[]

Not much is known about Patience when she was alive. She lived in an unknown Puritan colony, and was considered extreme in her views. In 1692, she was exiled from the colony due to her extremist behavior, such as wishing to execute a five-year-old girl for speaking to a doll, which Patience believes is a sign of witchcraft. While being exiled, Patience decides she is going to make her own colony that matches her level of extremism. Sometime after being exiled in 1692, Patience dies while undergoing a bloodletting procedure. The reasons that caused her to undergo this treatment are unknown.

The older ghosts claim that she was always a bit strange and unlikeable.

She was trapped in the ground surrounding Woodstone Mansion when Isaac sneezed and let go of her hand when they were escaping from a hole in the ground. The other ghosts suspected that she may be feral now, after being alone underground since 1895 (129 years).

In "Isaac's Wedding," she reappears in the basement. Flower says that Patience visited her when she was stuck in the well and they had become friends. When Flower relays this tale to Thorfinn, Isaac, and Sas, they think she's being her usual nonsensical self. Much later, Flower tells Sam and Alberta, who were confused initially until she reveals the name of her friend. Alberta quickly realizes who the friend is and tells Sam it was the ghost that Isaac lost in the well. The Cholera ghosts later meet Patience, who tricks them into luring Isaac to the basement, where Patience abducts him and pulls him into the dirt. After witnessing this, the basement ghosts decide to keep quiet about it.

Patience wishes to keep Isaac in the dirt with her for eternity. When Isaac voices that he would rather go home because he misses his friends, Patience pulls Sasappis into the dirt to accompany him. When she realizes both Isaac and Sasappis don't like her, she sets them free and returns to the dirt. Sasappis eventually convinces her to return to the mansion.

Patience resides in the mansion for a short time, and rooms with Alberta. She is shown to be off-putting, often sneaking up behind people and startling them when she speaks. Patience is not adjusted to the modern world, and is still shown to have kept her extremist Puritan views. She only stays in the mansion for a short time, eventually deciding to return to the dirt. Before she leaves, she vaguely mentions there being "others" in the dirt.

Special power[]

Patience possesses a macabre power which allows her to make blood drip down walls that can be seen by the living. It has been implied that the blood is her own and that she has a limited supply of it which replenishes over time. She can also write short words in the blood.

Patience: 'Tis from the bloodletting that killed me.

Patience: They're staying? But they're still living in sin!
Sasappis: Uh, actually they got married in the car. You just missed it.
Patience: How wonderful. Well, they should head to the matrimonial bed and multiply forthwith.
Hetty: It's really all or nothing with you, isn't it?
