"I'm a writer, you see. I'm like Miles Franklin, except without all that tiresome feminism."
— Miranda to Kate, I See Dead People
Miranda Persephone Bathsheba Munchen is the ghost of a socialite and prospective bride from the 1910s. She appears in Ghosts Australia and is portrayed by Ines English.
Biography[]
History[]
Miranda was the only daughter of Mr. Munchen, a sheepherding magnate, and his wife Mary Munchen. In the early 1900s the Munchens owned Ramshead Manor and built it in its present configuration, demolishing Eileen's old pub in the process. Miranda is the only ghost who was raised at Ramshead.
By 1916, she was living there with her mother when she received a proposal from her neighbor Roland Larkin via his sister Virginia, since Roland and his two brothers were all fighting at the Battle of the Somme at the time. While Roland was away, Miranda and Virginia's friendship deepened, despite both women being complete opposites.
In late 1918, Miranda and Virginia returned to Ramshead after attending a ball together celebrating the end of World War I. Miranda's mother scolded her for going out while there was an outbreak of influenza (Spanish Flu). Miranda shrugged off her mother's concern because the paper had reported that only servants and soldiers could get the flu. Mary announced that Roland had been released from quarantine and the wedding would go forth, which quickly seemed to dampen both women's spirits.
While trying on dresses for her upcoming nuptials, Miranda began coughing, which Virginia mistook for adjusting her dress too tightly. Miranda admitted she was scared of getting married because she didn't even know Roland. Virginia comforted her, saying their physical relationship would come naturally and that all Miranda needed was some practice, and kissed her. Shocked, Miranda pulled away.
On the day of the wedding, a very ill Miranda attempted to see Virginia at the Larkin Estate to apologize for getting sick (and likely to admit her feelings for her). Mary stopped Miranda and said she couldn't go - the wedding had been cancelled because Virginia had passed away from her own illness. The news crushed Miranda, who broke down crying.
Death[]
In 1919, Miranda presumably died from influenza, either the same day of her wedding or not long after since she was still wearing her wedding dress at the time of her death.
Ghost power[]
Miranda using her ability to haunt Kate and Sean out of the manor.
She is able to lower the temperature to below freezing when she mutters under her breath, which visibly turns foggy in the cold.
Appearance[]
Miranda is a tall, thin woman with long dark brown hair and blue eyes. Her face is flushed and her nostrils are reddened from being ill. She wears a floor-length cream wedding dress with embroidery at the shoulders, chest, and waistline, as well as the engagement ring given to her by Roland, which Virginia brought to her during their first meeting.
Personality[]
Miranda is an aspiring writer with an interest in science-fiction, "elegant, opinionated, and sassy". She considers the other ghosts uncultured and wishes she wasn't stuck with them. At the same time, she is herself prudish and ignorant of sex because of her sheltered upbringing, as well as a feminism skeptic, and devolves into childishness at times. She is often seen sitting or standing awkwardly by herself, or laying awake on beds and couches.
Trivia[]
- A portrait of Miranda can be seen on the wall in both the 1910s and modern day scenes.
