Melanie was a friend of Stephanie's and her lab partner at school before the latter's murder at Woodstone Mansion. She is married to Tad.

Melanie attended the same high school as Stephanie and Tad in the Hudson Valley and was part of the same social circle. On prom night in 1987, Stephanie was brutally murdered with only Tad surviving the attack. Five days after the murder, Melanie attended a vigil at Woodstone with Tad. Seeing them together unknowingly angered Stephanie, who had recently become a ghost and saw their newfound closeness as the ultimate betrayal. Melanie later married Tad in 1994 and had a daughter, Stephanie, named in honor of the friend they both lost.
