Jayanth 'Jay' Arondekar is an up-and-coming chef and the husband of freelance writer Sam. He appears in the American sitcom Ghosts.

Biography[]

Jay used to live in Manhattan, New York before moving upstate. Sam calls it a shoe box but he likes how small the apartment was. He decides to max out all of their credit cards and took out loans to turn Woodstone Mansion into a bed and breakfast after Sam is put into a coma as said in Pilot.

In the episode The Baby Bjorn, Jay was the first to figure out how Bjorn and Thorfinn could talk to each other from the windows. He realized that he could see the Farnsby's house when the tree was taken down.

After finally believing his wife on the existence of ghosts, he becomes agitated when they grass him up to Sam in "Dinner Party."

In D&D after learning Pete played D&D in his lifetime. He was happy to have him and the other ghosts play with him with Sam as the translator since he feels left out since his city friends are moving on without him and, while Sam automatically gained the ghosts as her new build in friends, he hasn't made new friends in Hudson Valley.

He isn't happy when he sees what Trevor looks like and then realizes that he hits on Sam in Jay's Sister. Bela also reveals that he had the same password since high school. She also made him wear a dress when he was five. His sister visits and refers to him as "LL Uncool J."

He walks through Flower in the episode Weekend From Hell and creates a new recipe, that turns out to be a big hit. Flower also says that he wrote a rock opera and finished an adult coloring book. Attempting to remember the recipe, he tries to walk through Flower several times only for her to run away after he gains an addiction.

In various episodes he's shown an interest in superhero movies, sports, cartoons, and pop culture. This includes:

  • In the episode Dinner Party its mentioned that he collects action figures.
  • In the episode Alberta's Podcast, Thorfinn mentions that he plays Mario in his free time.
  • In the episode Man of Your Dreams, Sasappis mentions Jay mostly dreams of sci-fi movies, basketball, and Sam in the Princess Leia "Slave dress."

Jay is also a fan of sports and some physical activities. He'll take guests fishing like in Trevor's Body. He's shown playing basketball in Jay's Friends along with pickleball and golf in Farnsby & B. He is a New York Knicks fan.

He thinks that an Olive Garden and Cheesecake Factory worker flirts with Jay prior to the events of The Vault.

Appearance[]

Jay dresses very casual as a day-to-day wear. Isaac even complimented him, claiming that Jay would look good as a militia man. On formal occasions, he would dress formally.

Personality[]

Jay contrasts sharply with his wife, exhibiting a reserved and hesitant demeanor. His character is particularly highlighted by his panic when Sam fell into a coma after tumbling down the stairs at Woodstone Estate; he remained by her side, deeply concerned for her well-being. During this time, he reflected on his own selfishness, acknowledging his initial reluctance to move to Woodstone Estate and transform it into a bed-and-breakfast. In a pivotal moment of self-realization, he decided to support Sam's dreams by using their savings to hire construction workers for renovations.

Despite his efforts, Jay experiences jealousy over his inability to see or hear the ghosts like Sam does, which adds complexity to his character. He often feels left out and envious, especially when he sees her interacting with them, prompting him to seek companionship with Pete, one of the ghosts. Nevertheless, he does his best to assist the spirits in any way he can, demonstrating his desire to contribute to their world.

Over time, Jay has grown more creative in his interactions with the resident ghosts. This growth is exemplified in the episode "Halloween 2: The Ghost of Hetty's Past," where he inadvertently inspires Trevor to write a message on the mirror, ultimately leading to the discovery that Sam was trapped in the safe. Despite never having met Sas, Jay's familiarity with the other ghosts allows him to recognize and identify him, showcasing his growing connection to the supernatural figures in their lives. Additionally, Jay is a big fan of Dungeons and Dragons, which reflects his imaginative spirit and desire for adventure, further enriching his character. Upon briefly becoming a ghost, he was very excited at meeting them and using his deduction to correctly identify each one and took the time to adapt to being a ghost while getting to know each of them. Jay also found the life of a ghost to be exciting when going through walls.
