"Bump in the Night" is the fifth episode of Series 2 of Ghosts and its 11th episode overall. It premiered on 19 October 2020.

Synopsis[]

It's the first time Mike has been left alone with the ghosts at night, but he assures Alison she should have a night out and let her hair down. The ghosts happily pass the time with music club, but they're interrupted by some uninvited guests. It becomes the ghosts’ mission to try to alert Mike and figure out how to protect the house from the intruders.

Plot[]

Alison, Mike, and all the ghosts are sorting equipment for the wedding, like silver cutlery and candlesticks. The Captain tells Humphrey that he is set for night watch today, which the latter is reluctant about but agrees to.

"Oh, fine. Pick me up at six. Literally."

-Humphrey to the Captain

Fanny is talking to Mike (which, of course, he can't hear) about how to organise things properly. Alison tells Mike not to try and bend a fork.

A teenager and man turn up at the house in a white house. The man explains that they are going to check the house for any openings that they can enter through in the night- they are going to burgle the place.

Alison tells Mike that she is going to leave to meet her friends. Mike expresses reluctance, saying the ghosts are 'dead and weird'. Alison leaves the house. The burglars are outside, waiting to go in when everyone's out (they don't know Mike is still in the house).

Mike talks to the ghosts, explaining that he just wants to be left alone. Kitty, who is singing very loudly, can't hear him.

Humphrey sees the burglars pull up at get out, and shouts 'intruders!' The Captain, who is doing a snare drum solo, cannot hear him. The burglars enter the house and the boy knocks over a piece of furniture. The ghosts go to investigate, and sees the burglars. The Captain, in full-military mode, tells someone to alert Alison, and others to keep inventory of what is lost.

Pat attempts to convince the boy, Nev, to change his mind- the latter can of course not hear him. Nev walks through Mary which makes him smell smoke, freaking him out. Thomas comes in and explains that Alison is gone.

"Gentleman. We're on our own."

-The Captain to the ghosts

Kitty and Mary are trying to remember everything, and Kitty tells Mary about 'Richard-of-York-Gave-Battle-in-Vain'. Kitty tries to recreate this memory method.

"Cups. Cups. S-s-s-s-s- some more cups."

-Mary

The rest of the ghosts are hyping Julian up to ring the emergency services with his special power. Of course, the services can't hear them, so they run to the pantry to fetch the plague girl, who can be heard. Vin, the burglar, comes in and sees the moved telephone.

"Ghosts! It was definitely ghosts!"

-Nev to Vin

The latter tells Nev to cut the main telephone line. The ghosts return and call the services. Jemina sings the rhyme, which is the only thing she is able to say. Meanwhile, Julian, Robin and Thomas try and wake up Mike, and Julian successfully pushes his nose.

Outside, Nev cuts a line, but he actually cuts the electricity instead, sending him flying backwards. All the lights go out. Next, he manages to cut the telephone line.

The two burglars inspect a painting, deeming it not worthy of robbery. An outraged Fanny correct them.

"Well, it's a fine piece, look at the brushwork!"

-Fanny

Julian tries to push over a glass to wake up Mike, but the glass just pours and doesn't break. Instead, Julian manages to set off an array of objects that fall over, successfully waking up Mike.

The burglars hear noise, and pick up a poker and candlestick.

The ghosts try and use Morse code, but Mike just freaks out. Mike calls Alison and she is able to relay the information the ghosts want to say back to Mike. A worried Alison tells Mike to call the police and tries to find a ride home herself. The phone runs out of battery before Mike can call 999.

Mike attempts to talk to the ghosts through knocks, but it doesn't work. The ghosts rush to the bathroom and turn on the tap. Mike realises what they're trying to do and helps them, lighting a match and setting up steam on the bathroom mirror. He then asks how many burglars there are, and Julian answers with 2 0. A terrified Mike runs off before Julian can finish. Alison tries to get a ride, but the man refuses, prompting the former to spitefully knock over some papers.

Mike is sneaking around the house, but he keeps running into the pair of burglars. Fanny, who is following the burglars, tells them, to no avail, to wrap the glasses in something. Kitty and Mary are trying to make another rhyme.

Alison inadvertently talks to a dead hitchhiker. She is finally able to get a ride.

"Oh, were you murdered whilst hitchhiking too?"

-the dead ghost

Robin is running around the estate to fetch help, but he cannot leave and so howls like a wolf. Barclay hears his dogs howl back and wakes up, shotgun in hand. The dogs lead him to Robin, who howls for them to get closer.

Alison returns home. Pat is berating Vin, promising a bad time in prison. Kitty and Mary can't remember what they stole. The burglars leave the estate.

Mike comes out in full medieval knight armour, and them topples over. Fanny tells them to kill the witness before they can alert the police, then pauses.

"What have I become?

-Fanny

As the burglars leave in the van, Barclay intercepts them with his dogs and shotgun. The police arrive, and get them arrested. The officer explains that Nev will probably only be in probation, since he is young and it's his first offence, much to Pat's indignation. Alison thanks Robin. When she returns to the house, she tells Mike that she thought the ghosts were selfish but were really quite good, now. She then walks into the bathroom, where Julian is having a steam bath.

"Well close the door then! I've had a hell of a day."

-Julian
